Cross Trainers

Welcome to Cross Trainers HQ!

When choosing exercise equipment for use at home, people look for equipment that can provide an all round workout without needing too much valuable space. A cross trainer, also known as an elliptical trainer, provides a good upper and lower body workout ideal for beginners and people starting an exercise regime.

Cross trainers are stationary exercise machines that simulate the movement of walking of running, with pedals that move in an elliptical motion. Because cross trainers do not cause excessive pressure on the joints, they reduce the risk of injury from the impact of running on a road or track. Most models have handles that the user holds while walking, pushing and pulling them at the same time as the feet are moving. This works the user’s arms, and the twisting motion of the torso flexes the stomach and sides as well.

Cross trainers provide a cardiovascular workout that can work your upper and lower body quite effectively, building flexibility at the same time. Of course, the advantage of having the equipment in your home is considerable. With a cross trainer at home, you save on monthly gym fees, traffic and the queues for equipment so often found at peak times in the gym.

In addition, one of three factors found to really work for weight loss was the facility to exercise at home. With cross trainers, you can hop on the machine for a quick workout whenever it suits you, so you are likely to exercise more regularly. It has also been found that people with home exercise equipment exercise more frequently, breaking a 45 minute workout at the gym into shorter sessions at home. When those more frequent sessions are longer, you are actually doing more exercise.

Choosing the right Cross Trainer
Your choice of cross trainers is wide – but there are a few points to consider before you rush out and buy the most expensive one you can find.

If you are starting a weight loss regime, or just want to get fit, but have not exercised in a while, then the basic belt type cross trainers will be adequate. These will give you a basic workout, and they are more affordable machines. The magnetic type is better suited to someone who already does some exercise, or is reasonably healthy and fit. These cross trainers have more resistance programmes and more training levels, so they allow you to progress further in your workout. Some cross trainers allow you to adjust the slope as well as the resistance levels. Cross trainers are generally not recommended for the serious athlete, as they do not give you a strenuous workout – although it may not feel like it the first few weeks you use it!

New machines have front wheel drive, which can be more expensive. Rear wheel drive allows you to move your legs in steeper steps with your body positioned towards the centre of the machine. This is a matter of personal taste and what feels most comfortable to you. If you are going to buy online you might want to try a few models out in a store to check which model you prefer.

If other members of the family are likely to use the cross trainer machine, you may want a machine that has adjustable foot plates to accommodate the different heights of family members. A machine with more resistance levels is likely to suit everyone, but will cost a little more. The ability to increase resistance allows you to push yourself as you get fitter, ensuring that your workout is exercising you, not getting easier with each passing day.

Belt type machines can be quite flimsy, and this will affect the life of the machine. It is preferable to get a robust machine that will last a long time, even if it does cost a little more at the outset. Check the warranty on the machine you are buying, and what the service options are.

Convenient, effective and affordable
Cross trainers are easy to use, and, once installed in your home, will leave you with no more excuses! You will need the same amount of space as for a small sofa, with some space around it to allow for your movement.

Positioning Cross Trainers

Try to position the machine in an area where you will use it. Some people prefer to have their cross trainer in the bedroom for early morning workouts, others put theirs in the TV room so they can watch their favourite TV shows while exercising.

No matter which machine you buy, it will only be effective if you use it regularly. As with any exercise, regular frequent workouts, increasing in intensity over time, will help you to get fit and trim. Cross trainers are designed to work most of the muscles in your body, providing a gentle but effective workout.
